New Sydney Place LTN – Sign the objection
It is quite clear that B&NES council intend to make the New Sydney Place Low Traffic Neighbourhood permanent, despite it creating:
  • Reduced safety.
    • Sydney Road has a lower accident history than the roads that traffic is being displaced onto. It’s had no recorded accidents in the past 5 years.
    • It is much more dangerous for cyclists as there is no easy route for cyclists from the Bathwick Estate into the city centre due to the increased traffic congestion particularly at peak times.
    • It is much more dangerous for cars to exit the Bathwick Estate having to deal with fast traffic from the right and left. You also have to cross two lanes and a cycle track to exit the estate.  This is especially difficult when the yellow box is frequently blocked.  Traffic backs up into the Bathwick Estate on Forester Road and the exit into Beckford Road feels very unsafe.
  • Increased congestion, economic loss and pollution.
    • Nearly 1.5 million vehicles a year will be displaced, and a 1-minute delay for each vehicle means 36 tonnes more CO2, and £220k of economic loss every year. The scheme will exacerbate the climate crisis rather than alleviating it.
  • Impact upon our community.
    • The 1000 residents who live on the Bathwick Estate were not consulted but are the most directly impacted by displaced traffic. Photographic records have been kept which record increased congestion levels.
Those of us opposed to the scheme therefore intend to take the last option available to us – a formal objection using the applicable Road Traffic Regulations, which may lead to the withdrawal of the scheme or a Public Inquiry. Despite the Council not publishing the results of the Scheme until the trial has finished in early October, we need to lodge an objection by the end of September to comply with the regulations. We’ll also be complaining about the way in which decisions on LTNs are taken by B&NES, and the fact that trials data is meaningless as it is being taken when traffic on the A36 is down by 15-20% due to the roadworks.
