It is quite clear that B&NES council intend to make the New Sydney Place Low Traffic Neighbourhood permanent, despite it creating:
- Reduced safety.
- Sydney Road has a lower accident history than the roads that traffic is being displaced onto. It’s had no recorded accidents in the past 5 years.
- It is much more dangerous for cyclists as there is no easy route for cyclists from the Bathwick Estate into the city centre due to the increased traffic congestion particularly at peak times.
- It is much more dangerous for cars to exit the Bathwick Estate having to deal with fast traffic from the right and left. You also have to cross two lanes and a cycle track to exit the estate. This is especially difficult when the yellow box is frequently blocked. Traffic backs up into the Bathwick Estate on Forester Road and the exit into Beckford Road feels very unsafe.
- Increased congestion, economic loss and pollution.
- Nearly 1.5 million vehicles a year will be displaced, and a 1-minute delay for each vehicle means 36 tonnes more CO2, and £220k of economic loss every year. The scheme will exacerbate the climate crisis rather than alleviating it.
- Impact upon our community.
- The 1000 residents who live on the Bathwick Estate were not consulted but are the most directly impacted by displaced traffic. Photographic records have been kept which record increased congestion levels.
